AVIARY BIRDS

Pets Corner Aviaries

Our aviaries house a range of birds which include Budgies, Cockatiels, Chinese Painted Quail and the very colourful Golden Pheasant and Mandarin ducks.

  • Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus)

The cockatiel is a small cockatoo species native to Australia. Like other cockatoos, they are a crested parrot, using their crests in signalling. Their vocalizations range from soft cheeps to piercing cries, with males being louder than females. Male cockatiels have brighter coloured cheek feathers than their female counterparts.

  • Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus)

Budgerigars are native to Australia, where they form large flocks under favourable conditions. Domesticated budgies tend to be larger than their wild relatives. Budgies have been reared domestically since the 1850s. Like other parrot species, they can learn to mimic a wide variety of sounds. You can learn a lot about a budgerigar from the colour of the cere (the area above the beak containing the nostrils). This area is royal blue in males, or white to brown in females, and pink in juveniles.

  • Chinese Painted Quail (Coturnix chinensis)

Chinese painted quail are a small species native to South-east Asia, the West side of Oceania and Australia. They are also known as King Quail, Chun-chi, Asian Blue Quail or Blue-breasted Quail. These birds have been bred to create a wide variety of colours and are the smallest true quail species.

  • Canaries (Serinus canaria)

Canaries have been bred in captivity since the 17th century. Their wild ancestors are finches from the Macaronesian Islands (the Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands). Canaries are renowned for their beautiful singing voices.

  • Diamond Doves(Geopelia cuneata)

Diamond doves are a small pigeon species native to Australia with a length of 19 to 21 centimeters. These birds take their name from the white spots and black edges on their wings. Although wild birds often live only 3-5 years, diamond doves can live 15–25 years in captivity.

  • Golden Pheasants (Chrysolophus pictus)

The golden pheasant is a beautiful species that is native to the forests in mountainous areas of western China. Our adult pheasants live in Pheasant Crescent in Pets Corner. The male is brightly coloured and his hens look very similar to those of female common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus).

  • Mandarin Ducks (Aix galericulata)

Mandarin ducks are native to the forests of eastern Russia and in China. During the breeding season, the Mandarin drake has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers" as well as two prominent orange "sails" on its back. Mandarin ducks nest in hollows in trees and once the eggs hatch, the mother must encourage her young ducklings to take the plunge from their tree!
